Organ Scholar – St Michael’s, Heavitree

Overview

Following the recent appointment of our Director of Music, St Michael’s Church, Heavitree, is pleased to invite applications for an Organ Scholar to join and support the growing musical life of the parish. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an aspiring organist to gain practical experience in service playing, accompaniment, and choral work within a friendly and supportive church setting.

Expectations

Attend and accompany the Friday rehearsals:

Children’s Choir: 4:30–5:30pm

Adult Choir: 5:30–6:30pm

Play for the Sunday morning service (10:30am), including any necessary preparation and rehearsal beforehand.

Assist with music preparation, working closely with the Director of Music on repertoire and liturgical planning.

Assist with the training and musical development of the church’s new children’s choir, supporting rehearsals and services as required.

Opportunities may also be available to:

Accompany weddings, funerals, and special services (fees payable in addition).

Conduct the choir and lead music in services when appropriate.

Honorarium
An annual honorarium of £1,000, payable in instalments.

Development Opportunities
The Organ Scholar will benefit from:

Regular mentoring from the Director of Music.

Opportunities to perform solo organ repertoire in services and concerts.

Practical experience in liturgical accompaniment and choir training, including work with children.

Guidance and support towards ABRSM or ARCO examinations, if desired.

Person Specification
We welcome applications from:

Organists of any age with a secure keyboard technique and an interest in church music.

Candidates keen to develop skills in accompaniment, rehearsal technique, and working with singers of all ages.

Those able to commit reliably to the weekly schedule throughout the church or academic year.

Someone with an understanding of the Christian faith and an appreciation of the place of music within the liturgy.
