In Marriage, a man and woman vow to love and honour each other all the days of their lives. The Church of England affirms, according to Jesus’ teaching, that marriage is in its nature a union permanent and lifelong, for better for worse, between one man with one woman to the exclusion of all others, for having and nurturing children, and for the benefit of society.
After you are married you have a new legal status, possibly a new name and a new family unit. This changes the way others relate to you too, whether they are close to you or not.
The vows that you make in church with all your wedding guests present, acknowledge that life has its ups and downs, but that you lovingly commit wholly to each other, sharing all that you have and all that you are with the other, for the rest of your lives.
Can I be married in Heavitree or St Mary Steps?
There are legal requirements and preliminary checks that have to take place before you can be married. You cannot be already married to someone else, or divorced with a former spouse still living. You must live within the parish or have a qualifying connection to the church (such as regularly worshipping with us, or you were baptised here, for example).
